Join us at our first Business Women's Lunch event in 2025 taking place at the fabulous Fenix. In Greek mythology, the Phoenix represents triumph over adversity, cyclical regeneration and rebirth. Only one of these rare creatures can exist at a time, and each lives for 500 years. As that lifecycle ends, a nest is built and set on fire. From those flames new life arises, and the process continues. Fenix was born into uncertain and challenging times, and its character is its destiny — breathing fresh energy into a Manchester dining scene when it’s most needed.  We look forward to an exciting lunch at the venue!

The January lunch is kindly sponsored by TransPennine Express and our guest speaker will be Nicola Buckley, People Director for TransPennine Express (TPE), an inter-regional passenger train operator encompassing the north of England into Scotland.

With a headcount of 1900 colleagues, TPE faces many challenges, such as prolonged industrial action, an enforced change of ownership and subsequent changes in leadership. Nic manages the recruitment, retention, engagement and wellbeing of colleagues across the business, leading from the front with an attitude of unwavering positivity and encouragement.

Nic joined TPE 12 years ago, following a 13-year career in the care industry with BUPA. She joined TPE as HR Business Change Partner in 2012, becoming Engagement Manager, before promotion to Head of HR in April 2018, then People (HR) Director in December 2021.

Nic leads a team of 27 in the People directorate, which has seen huge growth and development in the past five years, increasing from a headcount of 10 in 2019. Nic’s vision is to create a well-rounded team able to develop the needs of colleagues that enrich the employee experience. Nic has been relentless in creating business cases to justify the benefits of growing the team. There is now a Diversity and Inclusion Manager, Reward and Recognition Manager, Occupational Health team and an HR Apprentice role, all introduced in the past two years.
