Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) is a legislative measure initially introduced by the EU Commission to support a green transition aim of eliminating waste and pollution. Similar legislation is being adopted globally, most recently in Canada, India, Singapore and across some states in the US.

The ERP regulation essentially makes the producer (manufacturer, exporter, etc.) responsible for the end-of-life costs of products and their packaging (recycling, recovery, etc.), the aim being to not only remove the cost burden on local institutions, but also to focus producers on more sustainable design for products to support the circular economy.

Like the US, no two EU Member States have implemented the legislation in the same way, so the regulatory landscape is complex to navigate for UK exporters. This half-day course is a highly practical session helping delegates to fully understand their compliance obligations depending on their role in a supply chain, including what data they need to collect, how this data must be reported, the frequency of reporting, and importantly, thresholds and exemptions. This session looks at EPR regulation globally, providing a “How to” guide for all markets where the regulation exists.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Overview of core EPR legislation and its role within the wider circular economy regulatory framework

  • Understanding ‘producer’ types and their associated obligations

  • Detailed understanding of data gathering and reporting frameworks

  • Understanding of how Producer Responsibility Organisations (PRO) work and how to engage them

  • Understanding of how to ensure EPR compliance across markets where the regulation is in force

  • Preparing for changes and expansion of EPR and associated regulation over coming years
