Aviva Studios was one of six buildings shortlisted for the Building of the Year Award 2023.
Initially named Factory International, Aviva Studios is a 13,350-square-metre ultra-flexible building which opened to the public last year.
The design, led by OMA Partner Ellen van Loon, is described as "an ultra-flexible building that will allow for multiple configurations and enable large-scale artistic work of invention and ambition that is not made anywhere else."
The building is located in Allied London’s new St. John’s neighbourhood, formerly home to Granada TV and next to the Science and Industry Museum.
Following on from the legacy of Tony Wilson Factory Labels, this project is potentially one the most dynamic art buildings to have been built in the North for many years. It combines state of the art design with multi use facilities.
Built for the community it has all the potential to set North West Arts in its rightful place within the UK.
Use of new concept sustainable materials and acoustic design, particularly within the main structure, make it unique.
