Opened in November 2024, North View is Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust’s flagship new mental health hospital located at the centre of the North Manchester General Hospital (NMGH) site in Crumpsall. Purpose-built and co-developed, North View delivers a state-of the-art therapeutic environment to support service user recovery and enable staff to deliver the highest quality of care.
North View provides a much-needed replacement for the former dormitory accommodation at Park House. Costing £105m, it comprises 150 spacious, single bedrooms each with a private en-suite shower room. A variety of indoor activity areas, meeting rooms for family visiting, accessible gardens, spaces for therapeutic artwork, a gymnasium and a café are also incorporated.
Service users are cared for in seven adult acute wards, one older adult ward, a purpose-built Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and a treatment suite. Wards are designed to flex to meet changing needs.
With a gross internal floorspace of 132,000 sq ft, North View forms a key part of the Trust’s vision to significantly improve health and wellbeing for local people over the next 10-15 years.
It also provides a catalyst for the proposed redevelopment of the wider, 67-acre acute hospital campus. Funding, for which, is being sought through the New Hospital Programme
The aim of the Building of the Year Award is to recognise a building’s contribution to Greater Manchester in terms of construction and development. This could include the building’s significance to the City Region, its impact on the local economy, its effect on the local community, its importance in terms of urban regeneration and environmental enhancement, its design excellence, or its contribution to urban design and townscape.
North View represents the largest, single capital investment in mental health care services in Greater Manchester for a generation. The development has transformed inpatient mental healthcare provision and created a leading centre of excellence in the heart of the community it serves.
