The £140m Stockport Interchange was delivered on time and on budget in March 2024. The development includes a new town centre park, high quality apartments, state-of-the-art transport facilities and improved links between the interchange and train station.
The new interchange is now a flourishing gateway to Greater Manchester's new integrated London style transport system. It is designed with future Metrolink integration in mind to support plans to bring trams to the town.
The development provides:
- A state-of-the-art transport hub with 18 bus stands and shops accommodating up to 164 departures per hour
- People friendly public realm including a two-acre urban park above the interchange with active travel links via a connecting bridge and cycle ramp to seamlessly link the rail station and town centre
- 196 new high-quality apartments in a 17-storey building
The transport interchange has already transformed this important part of the town centre with its green spaces and relaxed public realm seating and walkways. It is the largest piece of an ongoing £1 billion step-change in urban regeneration within the town.
The aim of the Building of the Year Award is to recognise a building’s contribution to Greater Manchester in terms of construction and development. This could include the building’s significance to the City Region, its impact on the local economy, its effect on the local community, its importance in terms of urban regeneration and environmental enhancement, its design excellence, or its contribution to urban design and townscape.
The winner of the Building of the Year Award 2024 will be announced at the Property & Construction Annual Dinner, which is being held 6th March at Imperial War Museum North - click here to book your place.
