Malaysia, located in south-east Asia, currently boasts one of the region’s most vibrant economies as a result of decades of industrial growth and political stability. According to the Malaysian Investment Development Authority, the food-processing sector account for about 10% of Malaysia’s manufacturing output. Accordingly, processed food contributed about RM21.76 billion, while import value of processed food was amounted RM20.27 billion in 2019.
As stated by the Institute of Exports, Malaysia is the UK’s second-largest trading partner in ASEAN, with food and drink being one top sectors for trade between the UK and the south-east Asian country. As a result, there is a great amount of opportunities for British companies within the Malaysian food sector, with over £210 million worth of untapped export potential as of 2020.
