My name is Mel and I am the Fundraising Development Manager for a Sight Loss and Disability Charity based in Manchester called Henshaws.
Most businesses have a mission to be 'diverse and inclusive', please show your local community, your stakeholders and your existing and new clients you really mean it. We are looking for 100 amazing companies to donate £100 each during the month of June in support of our Henshaws Hundreds Challenge.
Henshaws is one of the oldest charities in the UK, this year we are celebrating our 186th anniversary. In 1810, Oldham businessman Mr Thomas Henshaw left £20,000, in his will, which was contested by his wife for 20 years. The original Henshaws School was opened in Old Trafford, Manchester in 1837.
We support anyone from birth upwards who have sight loss and very often an additional disability. I recently spoke with our Children and Young People’s Manager who told me about a little boy who was born with sight loss and a life limiting illness. The little boy, his parents and siblings have attended lots of our activities and have been supported by our counsellor. In February of this year, unfortunately the little boy passed away, just before his 1st birthday. His family are so grateful for helping them make memories, that they can share and remember together, forever. We also held a 90th birthday party for a lady who had attended our first School for the Blind, when she was 13 years of age. She has been supported by Henshaws for 77 years.
