For the second year running, Xaverian students have teamed up with ALL FM 96.9 Radio, Manchester, to create, produce and present a regular live show that promises to entertain and tap into fresh perspectives.
The show, which is broadcast from the ALL FM studios in Levenshulme, goes to air in Manchester across Ardwick, Levenshulme and Longsight and, being a digital station, can be listened to through an app or on the ALL FM website. Prior to the show going live, nine Xaverian students took part in three hours of training to learn how to create the show, including show set-up, mic use and how to structure the show, before their first broadcast which aired on 17 December 2024
Zayna Ahmad, 17, former Stretford high School pupil, studying A Levels in Psychology and Sociology and a Cambridge Technical Extended Certificate in Health & Social Care, commented: “I joined the radio show to gain hands-on experience and explore how radio shows are produced. I’ve always been curious about the behind-the-scenes aspects and thought this would be a great opportunity to learn whilst stepping out of my comfort zone.
“I’ve enjoyed going live on the radio, especially overcoming my initial nerves and becoming more comfortable speaking on air. As we take part in more shows in the future, I’m excited to further improve my presenting skills and contribute more creatively to the content.”
Tahmida Akhtar, 17, former Whalley Range 11-18 High School pupil, studying A Levels in Law, Psychology and Sociology, added: “I have really enjoyed discussing ideas about what to talk about and just simply talking and having a conversation with my peers. I believe I'm gaining lots of knowledge by listening to everyone and their opinions and believe I'm definitely progressing with my confidence and teamworking.
“I chose to study at Xaverian because all my siblings and cousins have studied here so I had heard many stories from them about how fun their time was! I also really liked the subjects they offered and, when visiting on taster days, I really loved the campus feel. I enjoy Law the most, it is super-interesting, I love learning about the cases and having an amazing teacher just makes it ten times better!”
Sadia Akbar, Sociology Teacher at Xaverian, set up the partnership with the radio station in 2023 with the aim of providing students with a platform to share their ideas. She said: “One of the things that sets Xaverian apart is our commitment to enriching students’ experiences outside of the classroom. This partnership with our local community radio station has been an incredible opportunity for our students! Running their own show has helped them develop confidence, communication skills and teamwork whilst giving them a real-world platform to share their ideas. It's been amazing to see their creativity and passion come to life on the air. I’m looking forward to seeing how this experience continues to inspire them!”
The Xtras Enrichment Programme at Xaverian College is split into three strands, Study Xtras, Work Xtras and Life Xtras and the wide range of enrichment opportunities gives students a chance to get involved in fantastic opportunities that are fun, interesting and educational, and will give them a really fulfilling College experience.
